Horseshoe pitching club members bring home titles
Kona Horseshoe Pitching Club members Linda Taketa and Tiffany Ferriera took top honors in the Hawaii State Doubles Championship held July 6 and 7 on Kauai, going undefeated in the Class A division.
Longtime Kona club leader Reggie Gomes and his partner, Jimmy Taketa, took second in Class B action.
A new eight-week summer league will start Aug. 1, with competition scheduled for Thursday evenings from 4 to 6 p.m. at the horseshoe courts behind the tennis courts at Old Kona Airport Park. You must be a club member to participate. League fees are $5 per week.

40-and-over basketball league starting
A 40-and-over half-court men’s basketball league will start Aug. 14 at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium.

West Hawaii Aikido club now accepting new members
West Hawaii Aikido club is accepting new members interested in practicing the martial art of aikido.
Students should be 8 years or older. Classes are instructed by sensei Ray Tanaka.
Practices are 6:30 to 8 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays at the Kona Imin Center in Holualoa.

Team Mango hosts Trashcan Triathlon
Team Mango will hosts its annual Trashcan Triathlon on July 28 near Kailua Pier.
In the short sprint-distance (half-mile swim, 10-mile bike and three-mile run) triathlon, participants will have time deductions if they pick up trash on the Trashcan Triathlon race course.

Parker needs assistant volleyball coach
Parker School seeks an assistant girls volleyball coach for the upcoming fall season.
Practices take place four days per week in Waimea, with matches scheduled on weeknights and Saturday mornings around the island.

Beginner golf classes for women
Golf professional Rob Wohlgemuth will offer a five-week series of beginner golf lessons for women at Makalei Golf Club beginning Aug. 17.
The classes are open to all women interested in the basics of golf. Classes meet five consecutive Saturdays from 8 to 10 a.m.

Koizumi and Manzo guests on Emily T. Gail Show
Jamie Koizumi, the assistant golf pro at Waikoloa Beach Resort, will be a guest on the Emily T. Gail Show this week. Koizumi talks about playing Kona junior golf in the early 90s, when she won the USGA Junior Amateur and played collegiately at Duke.
Jeff Manzo of Bike Works Beach & Sport at Queens MarketPlace will talk about the BikeWorks Starbucks team that will ride in the fifth annual MS Weekend Ride Aug. 3-4. The ride is on the Ironman bike course, with a 65-mile ride on Day 1 and a 50-mile trip on Day 2.
BIRR Mana Road race Aug. 4 in Waimea
The Big Island Road Runners will host the Mana Road 10’s Race at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 4 on Mana Road in Waimea.
The event includes 6.2- and 10-mile races, with registration beginning at 6:45 a.m. on Mana Road on race day. Admission is $10 for non-BIRR members and $5 for members.
A postrace ceremony features prizes and refreshments.

Kealakehe football workouts ongoing
The Kealakehe football team’s Prepare to Succeed summer workouts are taking place Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from to 3 to 6 p.m. through Friday at the school’s baseball field.
Students must have completed Department of Education physical examination and parent consent forms on file with the school in order to participate.
Forms are available at Kealakehe’s attendance and main offices. Workouts also require students wearing cleats for outdoor activities and gym shoes for the weight room.

Cross-country: 3:30 p.m. Aug. 5 in the stadium
c Air riflery: 3:30 p.m. Aug. 5 at the riflery range
Bowling: 3:30 p.m. Aug. 5 in the gymnasium

Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp in July
The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, the Hawaii Police Department’s HI-PAL Program and the nonprofit Big Island All-Stars are sponsoring the inaugural Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp for boys and girls ages 9 to 17 set for July 31 through Aug. 3.
Named in honor of the former University of Hawaii at Hilo basketball coach who helped guide the various camps and clinics around the Big Island, the Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp will take place at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium and other Hilo gyms.
Instruction and drills will be conducted throughout the day, and games will be played at night.
The camp fee is $70. All enrollees will receive a camp shirt and a group photo.
Bill O’Rear, a former Vulcan star and a UH-Hilo Hall of Fame member, is the lead clinician. Various guest clinicians will be announced at a later date. Parks Director Clayton Honma will serve as the camp director.
Registration forms are available during normal business hours at the Parks and Recreation office located in Aunty Sally Kaleohano’s Luau Hale at 799 Piilani St. in Hilo.
Make checks payable to the Big Island All-Stars and include the note “Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp.”
